Today is Blog Action Day , where 12,000 plus bloggers will all write about the environment. Since Al Gore just won the Nobel Prize, perhaps next year the Blogosphere will be so richly rewarded. Let's see, $1 million divided by 12,000 = $83 dollars each. Not much for a day, but not bad for a few words on a blog.
I do have not problems with a movement that tries to do something good. I have always believed that we risk our own lives if we do not consider the impact we have on the world around us (note posts on book Collapse). I do however, have trouble with those who say but do not do.
I'm happy to participate by doing something and it is not hard to find new things one can do. Still, the list of little things gets pretty long when you stop and look at it.
- We reset the sprinklers to run less frequently.
- Changed the settings on the computers to go to standby when not used for 15 minutes.
- Turn off lights, TVs and other energy consumption devices when not in the room
- Plant drought tolerant plants that use less water
- Minimize or eliminate teh use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers
- Keep all printed pages and use the backside (if blank) for scratch paper
- Seperate the trash
- Recycle cans, bottles, and green waste
I hope that the comments for today will be ones that highlight simple ways to do your part.
I guess I am a bit cynical but I wonder about bloggers today:
- how many will only post about the important topic
- how many will just use it to fill the day
- how many will post their normal material as well?
I am proud of my friend Chris Garrett - He wrote a great post: Noticing the World Around Us
My fellow Know More Media blogger - Bill Belew has a very insightful post - China Threatens Trade Suspension of Polluters
BTW - I'll resume the posts about the Hierarchy of Needs tomorrow.)
