Demanding Perfection - Part III
I was hoping someone would say it, and thanks to Maureen who writes the MadeDeadlyInChina blog, someone did: "While it's obvious that we can't eliminate all risks in life, shouldn't we do away with the ones we can?" (This was a part of her comment on last Thursday's blog entry here.) How much of the following can we allow?
  • Lead in paint
  • Lead in Candy
  • Second hand smoke
  • Drunk or otherwise impaired driving
  • Excessive Speed while driving
  • Texting while driving
  • Pedophilia
  • Children left in cars
  • Contaminated vegetables
  • Human Trafficking
Again, I am not saying that lead paint on toys is a trivial matter. I am just asking why we are so outraged when there are other situations that pose a danger to children that is as great or greater and very little is done to force change, eliminate error, and prevent any exposure?

Many of the issues above involve personal freedoms that some people feel cannot be limited. Maybe the guy who bought the lead paint felt it was a risk he was willing to take because it was convenient, saved money, or he just didn't care because he could control his situation.

BTW - Maureen has a petition to boycott Mattel - you can read more about it in her post at http://www.madedeadlyinchina.com/2007/09/07/boycott-mattel/.

If you have an issue you think should be added to the list of situations that are preventable and that should be prevented, I would like to hear about it.

What does this have to do with business development: It's called leadership. Learning to stand up for what you feel is right is an important component of leadership. If you don't, who will?
