Saturday - Carnival Day

My usual Saturday project is to look at ways to increase the visibility of this blog. I have tried gimmicks, link trades, and link directories. So far, the link directories has been a spectacular failure. It appears that the directory gets a 1000 links for every 1000 people who sign-up but each of those 1000 blogs gets 1 link. The one link is not well displayed and creates zero traffic.

This week, a new test - BLOG CARNIVALS

There are several blogs with the title "Blog Carnival(s)" On the blog, Blogcarnivals.com, the author cites a post from last year on ProBlogger:

If I had to pick one tip to give new and aspiring bloggers, it would be this: participate in blog carnivals.

This of course requires that you find blog carnivals that are appropriate, and those that are done right. One of the best places to find carnivals is Blogcarnival.com  They have a very comprehensive list and if you register you can track your submissions and your favorites. It also has a form to make submitting your articles VERY simple.

I chose a few to start with ...

Carnival ¤ !reach for magnificence personal develop
Next scheduled ¤ Aug 15, 2007
Host blog ¤ Reach For Magnificence

Carnival ¤ carnival of the entrepreneur
Next scheduled ¤ Aug 13, 2007
Host blog ¤ A Self-Entrepreneurship Online Magazine
Carnival ¤ corporate vigilance
Next scheduled ¤ Aug 12, 2007
Host blog ¤ Corporate Vigilance
Carnival ¤ carnival of small business issues
Next scheduled ¤ Aug 14, 2007
Host blog ¤ Atlantic Canada's Small Business Blog
Carnival ¤ personal growth carnival
Next scheduled ¤ Aug 14, 2007

One could spend all day submitting to carnival after carnival. That would get some traffic and possibly a Technorati point for each carnival.

I decided to mark each carnival I entered as a favorite so that I know where I have been. After you mark it a favorite it is easy to click the submit link. If you do the submission first it is not as easy to get to the favorite link. There is probably another way to do all of this but for now - we'll see how this works out. Prior to posting the articles to the carnivals this blog ahd a Technorati rating of 316 - not bad for 2.5 months of blogging.

Roger,

I think I just blasted my comment into deep cyberspace. So forgive me if this is a repeat:

To grow my blog, I use the same strategy that I use to grow my business: I identify my best readers, as I do my best customers, and at my blog I create content that meets my readers' wants, needs and desires.

At the end of the day it is about the "who" (readers) not the "what" (tactics, that is gimmicks). We write for readers, not for links. If we do a good job, the links will come.

Hope this helps.

Lewis,
First off, if you had put a comment twice I would be glad to fix that error.

Second, are you saying that all of the "Memes" and other "gimmicks" that I see go around, those are also for the benefit of readers? In cases where the blog writer describes the other author or site, perhaps, but most of what I see is just an informal link exchange with little value to the reader.

Sorry, if I am a bit caustic this morning but I find it hard to build an audience if no one knows you exist.
I agree that once you have an opportunity to tell your story it is the content that will make or break it. Like any good marketer, you know that you can't sell something if you do not get some attention.
What I see as an advantage of Carnivals is that they at least show the title and a bit about the post you have put up. I contrast this with lists of links where each word is linked to a blog but there is no real connection to that word and the blog's contents.
