The other day Josh posted a question on his blog that many VCs ask. "What would you do if you had unlimited funds?" The idea being that if you had whatever you needed for your start-up or growth-stage company, what would you be able to accomplish. This is also a test to see if you are holding back on any future potential opportunities. Believe it or not, not everyone wants to share the wealth with investors. Some people just want enough to get going.
As with just about anything, this got me thinking. Why not ask, "What would you do if you had no money?" On occasion, a VC will ask this question. This inquiry tests your devotion to your idea. It also tests your willingness to think about a problem rather than just spending money on it. It can also be a good test of your sense of reality. If you had no money at all, it is almost impossible to launch anything.
Whatever your answer, just be sure you have good reasons for your opinions. Firm belief is a good thing is a powerful emotion. Firm belief in a fantasy is suspect.
A scary situation for some is to consider this question with regard to their own personal finances!
