In the thread of Great Movies that Teach I would like to add the movie "Rounders" with Matt Damon and Ed Norton. I saw this on a flight so the version I saw was cleaned up a bit. (It would be nice to see these versions available on the DVD - or some way to skip the less appealing parts.) This post was inspired by a post on Landing the Deal about Jerry McGuire.
I am not a gambler. I don't advocate playing poker, swearing or violence. I just feel that this
movie, those things aside, teaches a valuable lesson. Jim Livanavage, who I met on that flight, first pointed this out to me. Jim now coaches hockey in Phoenix. I wonder what that says. Guy Kawasaki is a hockey nut, and now Jim is coaching hockey. Still, hockey is too cold a sport for me, but maybe something can be learned there.
The key quote from the movie "Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker."
The point in business, as in poker; everyone at the table who knows what they are doing, knows what everyone else is probably doing. Don't assume you can sneak something past the smart ones. You should count on them figuring out your play before you play it, and act accordingly.
What's your favorite movie with a business lesson?
