The WebMetricsGuru points to a story of interest on BoingBoing. I'm not certain that cards which can support plant growth are an improvement so much as a diversion. Since it was just on Saturday that I posted a note about Business cards, this gives more to discuss on that topic. Once again, the issue is value and utility.
While these cards are interesting, potentially, entertaining, and creative, they are not terribly functional nor do they appear to be intended to keep for a long time. They are not easy to scan or easy to read after the growth has occurred. They will make an impression to be certain. That impression will be lost when the card is tossed after the plants have grown.
The future of this "chia-card " remains to be seen. It does bring up some interesting possibilities. Dried sponges can be used to make cards that expand when placed in water. These could create a whole landscape of shapes that introduce your design capabilities.
In the end, this is not really a business card as much as it is a promotional piece. Soon 16mB microSD cards will be privately labeled and sold as business cards. Put them in your MP3 phone and hear all of the offerings of the person or company that supplied the "card". That still does not make them a business card in the traditional sense.
