
As I said in the previous post - just do the basics and you are going to be ahead of 80% of the rest of the companies. I just came across a blog by Scott, That Guy With The Name Tag. In a post he called, "What's in your wallet?" he talks about how a friend showed him a list of goals he keeps in his wallet.
According to his friend, who cites research done somewhere by someone, that only 3% of people write down their goals. I'm not sure it is as bad as all that but then maybe I hang around more organized people. I do believe that unwritten goals are not kept as well. I also think you can write things down and never look at them and achieve the same result as not writing them down.
I keep goals in my PDA. I have a large white board in my office with my Top 5. Each day I try to use a planner or even a recycled paper to write out the things I need to do. The phone rings, I get email, and many other distractions. With that list each time I return from an interruption, I go to the top and try to get as far as I can. ![]()
As the day wears and things look like they are not going to be done, it becomes easier to start telling other people that I cannot be interrupted now. Do I always finish? No. Do I work late to get things done? Yes. I consider it payback for not getting to them when I should have. The day after I can't relax and watch a baseball game I tend to be more on task.
So there you have it. A clear example of business basics that will set you apart from the majority of your competition. That competition can be other companies or other people. Writing down your goals is good, the next thing to work on is getting them done. That's what Modern Magellans do, they get things done.
