A Technorati Authority of 104 in 7 days - is it a milestone or the 100 yard mark?

Last night some time this blog earned a 104 rating for the single Technorati Authority number. The Technorati Rank is 44,101.

To quote Dorion Carroll: "Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has."

He then goes on to explain a little more about the whole system. Still I'm not sure how important or unimportant the 104 mark is. That the blog got there in just over a week could be a good thing or it could be below average. I'm not sure.

It seems like an easy rating to game - just set-up 500 websites and have them all point to you. If that number seems high to you please visit Nate Whitehill's blog. On Nate's blog you will see that one of his goals for June is to create 500 SEO magnet websites as a part of creating 1500 for a new venture.

So here are my targets for the future:

So, let's see at 100 links a week it should take me about 2,000 weeks to catch Techcrunch. Maybe I need to do a review of John Chow's blog. He is a blatant monetizer that claims he can help you make money online. If you make a separate post with a review of his blog, he’ll link back to you. Then this generous guy will highlight your blog so that his readers can find you. That he was booted from Technorati makes it difficult to know what value he brings to you. I may be inviting trouble just including his name.

Some other methods are to Digg, Stumble, and generally list the blog links everywhere. Hope that enough people see it and a few link here.

Perhaps the best might just to be to write well. Ask a lot of questions on other blogs and get a few links here and there every day. See Chris Garrett's riff on this, it's great. Be sure to leave a comment - it gets you a link back and 1 more Authority point! Leave 2 comments and you get to feel like you are a part of the conversation but you get no more A points. If your comments are good you get points with Chris and that could be worth something. Not sure what yet but it might be.

Is Technorati authority sort of like currency in Second Life? Anyway, I hope you reach your June goal.

Thanks for stopping by the Creative Think blog.

I would tend to agree with you and the others who discount the value except that most turn around and use it. They are listed on the Vial Garden because of it. They get to put little icons on their blogs when they hit milestones and so on.

SecondLife may seem like a joke to many but it would appear that a few people are actually making money - or should I say, allegedly making money there.

I think I'll try the write well with some help from friends to Digg, Fark, etc... so that people can find what I write. As it stands it's feeling quiet lonely so far.

You've got a good head start on the Technorati front by being part of KMM. ;)

As for feeling lonely, keep leaving great comments on other blogs and making friends just like you did at Eye on DNA. I'm glad to have "met" you!

Interesting article, but I think the Technorati Authority number is time limited. If I remember correctly it is 6 or 9 months, so every link you get will disappear after 6 or 9 months, meaning your numbers will start to drop in 6 months time. Of course everytime someone else links to you it is renewed. It is pretty clever actually. That way you are sure that the links on Technorati are constantly updated.

Thank you for your comments Hsien and Dennis.

Hsien - I will keep commenting. I think that is the way the blogosphere is supposed to improve.

Dennis,
You are correct. The "links" expire after 6 months. So one has to keep a continual feed going. I have a number of sites I check daily. If I have a comment that seems useful and valid I make it. If not, I wait for the next time. That should keep things fresh.

Makes me wonder though..does having more authority on Technorati result in a higher traffic to your site?

I think a Technorati rating only works for you if it gets you listed on other sites like the Viral Garden or the Power 150.
It does help you see if you are connecting with others. If your content is such that other people link to it then it has real value. If it is just the product of games, well that may have value for you.
