Scientist, Entrepreneur, Evangelist, CEO, Consultant, and Author
I am very excited to have the opportunity to share some of what I have learned and some of what I will continue to learn with a wider audience of Modern Magellans. To me, a Modern Magellans are entrepreneurs, business owners, managers, and everyone trying to make their way in this world. I firmly believe that each person has a business they need to run - their own life. Many of the same principles that are used to build a company have application to how we build our careers.
I received my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Caltech in 1996. After leaving Caltech, I have been on the business side of science. I helped with 4 start-ups, twice serving as CEO, one that was my company and one I was asked to run. I have also served as a consultant to dozens of companies in the laboratory reagents and diagnostics markets. I usually concentrate on the focus of the executive team, industry relationship development, fund-raising, investor management and developing collaborations or acquisitions.
I am available for speaking, corporate training, and executive coaching. Please contact me directly using the email address drrogera [at] modernmagellans [dot] com or using this contact form. To hear a sample of my style view the Don't Eat the Steak video on YouTube.
The entrepreneurial urge hit while I was at Caltech and it has never left. During graduate school, I would compare offerings from various suppliers to find the best item at the best price for the lab. That led to the concept of what was then a novel database driven online purchasing system website for life science products and Anderson Unicom Group (AUG). AUG grew from a concept in 1994 to a full-fledged business, competing with much larger companies by 1996.
In 2000, BioCarta, a San Diego based immunology products company acquired the assets of AUG and asked me to stay on and, later, to run the operation. I concentrated on improving supplier and customer confidence and arranged for additional funding to grow the operation.
While I continue to consult with many early stage companies, for the last 9 months I have been busy writing. In May of 2007, Maps for Modern Magellans: Charts for Captains of Commerce was released. This is the first of what will be a series written for people who feel frustrated after starting a business and then realizing they need help but believe they do not have time to read a business book to get that help. Every chapter of this series can stand on its own. The reader does not have to finish the entire book to benefit from it. The maps, charts, and diagrams are designed to help business owners, and managers, better grasp and communicate important business principles.
UPDATE May 29, 2007 - Maps for Modern Magellans is also available at Amazon.com. Their system says it will take 4 - 6 weeks but that should not be the case. I'll order one and see how long it takes. (RA)

Congratulations on the new blog! The name is great - I get it right away.
I hope you have a great time navigating the blogosphere.
