Do you Squidoo?

I am the proud owner of several Squidoo "lenses"

My current focus has been the Don't Eat the Steak Lens This lens focuses on things I think Modern Magellans ought to know. I have a brief video for a presentation I gave a few years ago. I have lots of 5 point lists and a link to the daily Joe Martin cartoon.

Someone asked me the other day why I use Squidoo instead of a blog. I would say who it was but she just had a post the other day about how it is probably not a good thing to share the details of private emails even if they were not declared private. It was a good question, particularly since I was just working on getting this blog going.

If you are not familiar with Squidoo then this thread may not have as much meaning until you have visited their about page. It is probably useful to know that Squidoo was started by the Original Squid, Seth Godin.

In addition to the video, the 5 points lists, and the Joe Martin cartoon on the Don't Eat the Steak Lens, you can also vote on the best books for start-ups and the best books for existing businesses. There is a sample chapter from my book. I put lists of links to other places I have posted writings (Gather for example).

What I like about it is that I can use it as kind of a catch-all for a subject. I just add things as I find them. That seems to me to be how many of the pages are. You can subscribe to the RSS feed and get updates when things have changed. At some point I will have to trim it so that it loads faster. Right now, it's not too bad.

The real reason I created the Don't Eat the Steak page was to give my friends a means of showing others who I am with out making them carry around my book. It would have been great if they all just bought lots of copies and sent those out but I try to be a realist. I don't give out too many books to other people and I doubt many people do. A 5 minute video, that is something I can recommend. A bunch of 5 points lists. Again, I can send a person there and not feel like I gave them a big errand. So, that is my plan. Get everyone I know to tell their friends about this guy they know who wrote a business transformation book. Then to have them tell their friends that they can see if this guy says what they like to hear by going to a Squidoo page (lens) for about 5 minutes. Four of those minutes don't even require reading. If they want to spend more time there is no additional charge. If they want to vote on how much they liked the page (5 stars are always appreciated) so much the better. If those people want to tell others, that's even better.

A recent study on online recommendations showed that people were much more comfortable recommending something they had seen over a book they had not yet read. That makes sense to me. In this case there is nothing to buy, Just time to spend.

I have 5 lens all together and I'll talk about the other ones another time.
